Fall is a great time to start downsizing because the weather cools and the transition from Fall into Winter helps you feel like you are getting somewhere. When you are truly downsizing, it takes a long time. Not days or weeks, but months. When you are retiring and moving to a smaller place you truly get the right idea about what matters to you the most.
You will have a number of tough decisions. Have a plan on WHERE stuff is going to go before you even start. Piles will go much easier. What do you want your kids and grandkids to have? Give these items to them now. All the other stuff needs a place to go. Clothing you are not going to wear needs to be donated. Knick Knacks that have truly just been gathering dust for whatever reason, need to be donated. Furniture that you don’t care about needs to go. Call 2 Haul can help with all of this. Whether you need help with the sorting or you just want us to come and pick it all up.
Do a little at a time! Maybe you go through all your paperwork first. Get rid of old magazines. If there is one picture you want out of the magazine either take a photo with your smart phone or rip it out and put it in a folder. Toss everything except your house stuff if it is 7 years old. There is no need for all of those old checks.
Books, if you have a lot of them, can be a nightmare. Once you start though you will be able to let a lot more of them go than you thought. Books are very heavy to move. Take only the ones you truly love. Ones you will read or look at again.
Keep in mind you are letting things go NOT the memories. You need two sets of sheets, maybe 10-12 towels, things that are worn and in the back of closets and cabinets were forgotten anyway. Put them in the pile to leave. Once the pile is big, get it out of there. Create space for the next batch. How many plates do you really need? Glasses? Mugs? I put enough in one cabinet, and I know it is still too many.
If you have items that represent people to you, keep one or two items and that is it. This is probably the hardest part, but as I go along, I find that some things actually make me sad and not happy. Think about the items as you go through them.
Once you get going BELIEVE IT OR NOT it becomes freeing and you will get faster at it.
