Organize the Garage Part 1

bungees and ballsIf you have the luxury of having a garage you know how nice it is to park your car INSIDE out of the elements. Unfortunately the garage tends to be a catchall, and before you know it your car no longer fits. I was reading somewhere the organizing pros believe only 30% of us use our garage to store our car. Think about it, your car is worth probably more than anything you are storing in the garage. I am thinking a big ticket item like that should stay in the best shape possible.

Organizing a garage is DAUNTING I know. I will help if you need it. Please just let me know. HOWEVER if you are up to tackling it yourself here are some ideas:

garage organizationBefore you even begin you probably should get some large clear plastic containers, some bungee cords and any shelving that is not being utilized in the home. Our goal is to get as many things OFF the floor as possible. You are not going to be storing any extra food products in the garage as they attract critters. If you have an old refrigerator or freezer that you don’t or HARDLY use-  take it out. Your energy bill and wallet will thank you. If there are bicycles let’s try to hang them up. If you can afford it buy some shallow cabinets (remember we want the car door to be able to open). A cabinet that can lock away chemicals and such would be tremendous if you have little kids. If not, some shelving up high will do the trick. If you can afford a garage organizer system go for it. If you have large sporting equipment or ladders the ceiling is the place to store them. There are some great hangers out there. Remember to get those nails in studs and stay clear of  electric garage door openers and the doors themselves.

Take EVERYTHING out of the garage-yes it is going to have to be a nice day. Lay down some tarps on the driveway. At least 3 areas-one for things you are keeping, one for what is being thrown out and one for things to be donated. The KEEP section can go a step further and be divided by family member or by type of items. Some items can go to other places in the home. Sports equipment can go altogether in one section when it heads back into the garage (same for tools etc..) Keep in mind that paint should not be in the garage because the temperature affects it.

More to come!
